Tina Callahan
Tina is a 47-year-old fifth grade teacher who lives with her family in Biddeford. She suffered a stroke on September 14, 2002. She was admitted to New England Rehabilitation Hospital on September 24, 2002. She had a urinary catheter, visual problems, was unable to move her right arm and right leg and was unable to speak. The acute rehab team quickly had her progressing through more than three hours of rehab each day while she was in the acute rehab setting.
When she was discharged from New England Rehabilitation Hospital, she could use a wheel chair and a four-pronged cane. She was able to walk 150 feet with the cane and do a flight of stairs with assistance. She also needed assistance for bathing, dressing, and going to the toilet but she was on her way to independence. She was able to communicate with a picture board and some visual and gesture cues.
Tina is driven to continue her progress. She continued speech therapy for 2 ½ years at her own expense. Now she is able to communicate by writing words and she responds reliably to yes/no questions and she uses a communication notebook. She is able to go out into the community independently and volunteers at the school where she had been a teacher before the stroke. She also participates in the Maine Handicapped Skiing program.
