    Charles "Cuddy" Cohen
Cuddy is a 78-year-old male from Portland who suffers from severe chronic low back pain, heart disease, and a recent pulmonary disease that requires him to be on continuous oxygen. When he arrived at New England Rehabilitation of Portland, Cuddy needed maximum assistance for his activities of daily living (ADLs) which most of us take for granted such as bathing, grooming, and dressing.

When Cuddy left New England Rehabilitation, he was able to walk more than 150 feet with a cane. He needed supervision to safely mount and descend curbs and stairs but he was back to independence for eating, grooming and toileting. He needed assistance for bathing, dressing and meal preparation, but the acute rehabilitation allowed him to return home to continue his progress.

With hard work, and despite repeated medical issues, Cuddy has continued to improve. He keeps very active; he attends the Pulmonary Support Group, is an active member in the Portland Rotary and takes courses at USM's Senor College. In addition, he walks the South Portland indoor track six times each week! He walks 14 loops carrying his oxygen tank and resting after 2 laps to catch his breath.
