Elizabeth “Betsy” Minshull
Becky Austerer, PT, and Betsy, share some great stories of their time together at NERHP. |
New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland recently honored four inspirational patients who have overcome barriers and exceeded expectations. Each year, during National Rehabilitation Awareness Week, the clinical staff at New England Rehabilitation Hospital, select patients who have faced near impossible challenges and showed strength and determination through their rehabilitation process.
Among the honorees, the achievements of Elizabeth “Betsy” Minshull were celebrated at a ceremony held on September 23rd at the hospital. Betsy, who lives in Portland, suffered from a critical illness and respiratory failure. “Despite the initial slow start to Betsy’s rehabilitation, we soon discovered she had a sense of humor and strong family support,” states Becky Austerer, her physical therapist. “We challenged each other, and we wore hats!” Becky laughed.
Betsy’s debility was critical illness myopathy and respiratory failure. She had been ill for weeks, and was in a coma, so that when she was medically ready to be transferred to New England Rehab, she was unable to sit unsupported, to stand or to walk; even moving in bed was next to impossible. She was frightened, weak and timid. Therapy started at bedside with encouragement that her goal to be able to walk could be met. After many weeks of hard work, she finally began walking again and she sobbed with relief. Walking made her feel as if she would make it. Through all of it she never stopped trying, never complained and never gave up.
