Louis "Red" Soucy
As part of National Rehabilitation Week, September 21st through September 27th, New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland celebrated the accomplishments of four exemplary patients. Our staff nominates and selects patients who have overcome major barriers while recovering and rehabilitating from illness or injury. Their achievements were recognized at an awards ceremony to be held on Wednesday, September 24, 2008.
Louis "Red" Soucy, from Saco, was selected as one of the patient award winners. Red suffered a stroke and congestive heart failure. He was unable to walk and had difficulty swallowing. Red had been a barber in Saco for many, many years and “Red the Barber” received over 100 get well cards while he was hospitalized. His speech language pathologist, Sandy Illingsworth states, "Red’s great spirit and enthusiasm for life propelled him to make phenomenal gains at NERHP. He always had kind words of encouragement or a funny joke for other patients as well as staff and celebrated his 85th birthday here, sharing his cake with everyone."
Today Red and his lovely wife, Louise, visit our outpatient department where he continues to receive therapy. Often you can hear him playing his guitar and singing a snappy tune with his Certified Recreational Therapist, Kathy Kroll. If you stop by the therapy room to listen, he’ll take requests!
