Pulmonary Program
New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland offers an Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation program for individuals suffering from a debilitating pulmonary
disease.
Treatment Goals
The primary goal of the program is to restore the participant to the highest possible level of independent function.
This is accomplished by educating participants about their disease, actively involving them in medical care, improving exercise tolerance and
optimizing their ability to manage the disease and perform activities of daily living.

- Comprehensive education about pulmonary disease management
- Exercise introduction and progression
- Adaptive equipment evaluation and recommendation
- Nutrition counseling
- Energy conservation and activities of daily living instruction
- Home program development
- Stress management and relaxation training
- On-going monthly support group
- Clinical social work
Referral Process
All participants are admitted by a physician referral. The requirements for participants entering the program are:
- A clinical diagnosis of moderately severe to severe asthma, COPD, CF, interstitial lung disease or lung transplant
- An FEV1 of less than 70 percent predicted
- Highly motivated, willing to learn and able to integrate knowledge into practice at home.
- No significant associated medical problems that would interfere with the individual's participation in activities.
