NERHP Brain Injury Clinic

New England Rehabilitation Hospital of Portland’s rehabilitation-specific Brain Injury Clinic provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for patients who have had mild to severe head injuries (including concussion). Special attention is paid to mental and emotional processes as well as functional issues. Upon completion of the evaluations by a physiatrist (a physician who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation) and physical, occupational and speech therapy, patients will be provided with recommendations for follow-up rehabilitation care and for equipment needs. The referring physician receives an evaluation report with the recommendations.

Physiatrist Evaluation
A physiatrist will evaluate the patient in conjunction with the team to assess the patient’s overall medical status and functional deficits. The physiatrist works closely with the therapy team to design an appropriate rehabilitation program. The physiatrist will communicate our recommendations to the referring physician and arrange follow up as needed.

Case Management
Upon receiving a referral from the patient’s physician, the case manager will contact the patient to explain what to expect during the initial evaluation by the Brain Injury Clinic team and to schedule an appointment. The case manager will coordinate the evaluation process and therapeutic treatment plan. The case manager also arranges for additional resources such as home services and community resources.

Therapy
Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy will assess:

• self care
• mobility
• equipment needs for mobility and for home
• balance
• vision
• daily planning skills
