Brain Injury
A brain injury is an insult to the brain that disrupts the function of the brain; causes maybe traumatic or non-traumatic in nature. The severity of such an injury may range from mild (a brief loss of consciousness) to severe (an extended period of unconsciousness). Injuries can produce a diminished or altered state of consciousness, which results in an impairment of cognitive and perceptual abilities or physical functioning. A brain injury may also result in emotional and behavioral impairments.
Brain Injury Rehabilitation

Working very hard with his therapist, patient is able to perform a step-over-step gait pattern ascending and descending stairs. This patient received a brain injury after falling several feet from the roof of his home. |
After a brain injury it is important to choose an appropriate inpatient rehabilitation program which addresses physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioral changes. At New England Rehabilitation Hospital our clinicians have strong experience in treating neurologic deficits and behavioral challenges that occur after a brain injury. Many of our clinicians are Neuro-Developmental Treatment and Neuro-Integrative Functional Rehabilitation and Habilitation (NDT/Neuro IFRAH) certified.
The treatment team at New England Rehabilitation Hospital meets regularly to discuss treatment plans, progress, and recommendations for discharge. Family members are an integral part of our patients' rehab process and we encourage family members to participate in their loved one's treatment program.
The program provides a specialized interdisciplinary approach with a focus on structure and consistency.
