    Balance and Vestibular Program

The balance and vestibular program at NERHP's outpatient facility offers education and training to people with vestibular (dizziness) and balance disorders. Your sense of balance is composed of three separate body systems: vision, sensation and inner ear function. If you have problems with any of these areas, your balance may be affected. The opjective of this program is to decrease your dizziness and improve your balance.

You would benefit from this program if you:
    • have a sense of unsteadiness when walking or standing
    • have a feeling of dizziness, lightheadedness, and/or spinning
    • have had a fall, near falls, or any loss of balance.

    Program Goals
    • To function safely in your home
    • to increase participation in the home and community
    • to enhance quality of life

    Services
    • A licensed Physical and/or Occupational Therapist will complete a comprehensive balance and vestibular evaluation. The therapist uses this as a baseline to prepare a treatment plan that will meet the patient's specific needs and goals.
    • Treatment sessions generally last 45-60 minutes, one to two times per week for 2 to 8 weeks. Treatments may focus on flexibility, conditioning and specific balance and vestibular exercises.
    • If needed, consultants are available with a Neurologist and/or Physiatrist (a physician who specializes in physical rehabilitation medicine).
